Interior Finish Work on the South Shore
Trim, built-ins, stairs, doors and the thousand small decisions that make a room read as built rather than assembled. Interior finish work on the South Shore is the part of the job you look at from two feet away, every day, for twenty years.
Nobody notices good trim. Everybody notices bad trim.
A room can be perfectly framed, perfectly wired and perfectly painted, and still feel cheap. It is almost always the finish.
Baseboard that dies into a door casing at the wrong height. A crown that opens at the corner because the wall is not square and nobody scribed it. Reveals that change from one door to the next. A stair skirt that steps instead of flowing.
None of it is structural and all of it is visible. It is also the stage where a schedule that has already slipped gets made up, which is exactly why interior finish work on the South Shore is the stage most often rushed.

Interior finish work on the South Shore: what the stage contains
Six things, and every one of them is something you touch or look at from close range.
Trim and millwork
Baseboard, casing, crown, chair rail, wainscot and panel detail. Scribed to the wall that exists, not to the wall that should have been there.
Doors and hardware
Hung, shimmed and adjusted so they latch in February and still latch in August. So the hinge side gets the attention, because that is what decides whether a door swings on its own.
Built-ins and cabinetry
Bookcases, benches, mudroom lockers, window seats and closet interiors. Built to the room rather than ordered to fit it.
Stairs and railings
Treads, risers, skirts, newels and balusters, to the code spacing and the height an inspector measures. In other words, the most visible carpentry in the house.
Closets and shelving
The everyday things that get ignored in a budget and used every single day. They are also where a finished basement stops reading as a basement.
Paint-ready, or painted
We leave it filled, sanded and caulked so the painter can do their job, or we handle the paint as well.
Nobody notices good trim.
That is how you know it is goodThe crew that framed it is the crew that finishes it
On most jobs the finish carpenter arrives months after the framer and inherits whatever he left. Walls out of plumb, blocking missing where a bench was supposed to land, a stair opening that is an inch short.
We frame and we finish. Because of that, the blocking for the built-in goes in while the wall is open, and the stair opening is right because the same company laid it out.
If you are hiring us only for the finish on someone else's frame, we will tell you at the visit what we can and cannot make square.
- One crew from blocking to final adjustment
- Scribed to the house that exists
- Doors hung and adjusted, not just installed
- Stairs and railings to the code an inspector measures
- Everything itemized in writing before we start
How interior finish work on the South Shore runs
Free on-site visit
First we look at the rooms, the existing trim profile if there is one to match, and what is behind the walls where anything has to be anchored.
Selections and estimate
Then the profiles, the doors and the hardware get chosen, and you get a written estimate with the scope itemized.
Blocking and prep
Anything that has to be anchored gets blocking before the drywall closes, when that stage is still ours.
Install and walkthrough
Trim, doors, built-ins, stairs. Filled, sanded and caulked. We walk it with you before final payment.
What interior finish work on the South Shore costs
Finish is priced by the foot and by the detail, and the detail is where two quotes separate.
What raises it:
- Profile complexity. A three-piece crown is three times the labor of a single
- Built-ins. Site-built cabinetry is furniture made in a house, and it is priced like it
- Old houses out of square. Every piece scribed instead of cut is time
- Stairs. The most labor-dense carpentry in any house
- Matching an existing historic profile that nobody stocks
What keeps it down: a single clean profile used consistently through the house, stock doors and standard hardware, and deciding the profiles before we start. After the on-site visit you get a written estimate with the scope itemized.
When we are not the right call
If you need a few pieces of baseboard replaced, a handyman will do it faster and cheaper, and that is the right call.
If someone else framed the room badly and you want the trim to hide it, we will tell you what is possible and what is not. Trim covers a gap. It does not make a wall plumb.
We are worth it when the finish has to match an existing house, when there are built-ins or stairs involved, or when it is the last stage of a project we have been on from the start, like a kitchen or a bathroom.
Finish carpentry questions homeowners ask
Matching, timing and scope
Can you match the trim in my 1920s house?
Usually. Some profiles are still milled, some have to be run custom, and some can be built up from stock pieces to read the same. We take a sample at the visit and tell you which of the three yours is.
How long does finish work take?
It depends entirely on scope, from a few days for a room to several weeks for a whole house. Of course it is also the stage that reveals everything, so we would rather it not be rushed.
Do you do the painting too?
We can. Otherwise we leave it filled, sanded and caulked, which is the condition a painter needs and the condition most finish work is not left in.
Built-ins, stairs and licensing for interior finish work on the South Shore
Are built-ins cheaper than ordering cabinets?
Rarely cheaper, usually better. A built-in is made for the wall it sits on, which matters most in old houses where nothing is square. For example, a window seat in a bay is site work no matter who makes it.
Do stairs need a permit?
Replacing treads and risers in place usually does not. Changing the rise, the run, the opening or the railing usually does, because those are the dimensions a code inspector measures. We tell you which one yours is.
Are you licensed and insured?
Yes. We hold an Unrestricted Construction Supervisor License in Massachusetts, which is the license the state requires for structural work, and we carry liability and workers compensation insurance. Ask any contractor for their license and their certificate of insurance before you sign. Registrations can be checked with the Massachusetts Office of Consumer Affairs and Business Regulation.
